Pets & Your Remodeling Project
August 26, 2020

When it comes to remodeling your house, should you adjust the design to accommodate your pets? Pets can start to acquire a lot of things and in order to help make your home more functional and less cluttered, adding in some simple design changes can help. At Front Row Kitchens, serving the Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, and Stamford, CT areas, we always include our furry friends in the remodeling process. From choosing convenient storage locations to having a quiet place in the house to rest, we treat your pets just like family and include them in every remodel.
There are a variety of accommodations to your remodeling designs that you could make in order to help your home function smoother including:
Storage
- Pets are just like children and therefore may begin to acquire a lot of things including bags of food, cages, litter boxes, leashes, toys, and more. Most of the time, the larger the pet, the more space their stuff takes up in your home. If you are thinking of kitchen remodeling plans, consider making a convenient solution to storing your pet's belongings. This could include:
- adding extra cabinets or pull-outs to store their food and treats
- creating a concealed cabinet for their litter box
- turning a side table into a dog crate
- add cabinets to a mudroom to store pet's belongings
Feeding
- Having a dedicated space for your pet's food and water bowls helps provide them with routine and allows them to learn where their eating space is. Having dishes in the middle of your kitchen is not a great idea as kids may get to them or people may trip over them and no one wants to frequently be cleaning up water and kibble. Find an out of the way location where your pet can eat peacefully. If you have multiple pets, consider different eating areas, especially for those with food aggression. Also, consider adding a higher space for cats to eat to prevent your dog from getting at their food. This may include:
- adding a toe kick food dish
- creating a space to eat in a mudroom or corner of the kitchen
- adding an eating area higher on a counter in a mudroom or laundry room
Containment
- When it comes to planning a remodel, you might want to consider where your furry friend sleeps or hangs out while you are not home. Do they have free range of your home? Would you like to add a contained area for them to use? A mudroom is a great area for your pet to hang out, but you could also add a built-in gate throughout your home to section off areas. You could also create a built-in dog crate to eliminate a dog cage from sitting in the middle of your kitchen or hallway.
Flooring
- We can also help you pick out the best materials especially when it comes to flooring. If you have pets, you may want to choose flooring with a great deal of strength to prevent scratch marks and more.
Bath
- Instead of using your own bath to wash your dog, consider adding a dog bath to your mudroom or laundry room to assist in cleaning the dog before it enters your house.
